Where to keep an eye on property market trends

2022 has been another eventful year in the New Zealand property market, with dropping house prices marking the end of the latest upward cycle. While no one knows what’s next, it’s still a good idea to ‘stay in the know’ with what’s happening out there.  Here’s a list of reputable sources, to learn about the latest property market trends and commentary.

Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ)

REINZ is the industry association of real estate agents in New Zealand, and of course, they have access to a wealth of different data and insights. Once a month, they publish a detailed residential property report covering anything from house price trends to buyer activity, and other key national and regional statistics. If you’re interested in the rural and lifestyle markets, REINZ issues monthly reports on those as well.

Trade Me Property

Trade Me is yet another reputable source. Each month, their Property Price Index measures trends in the expectations of house prices listed through the platform. They usually provide information on housing supply, demand, and asking prices. While it’s less detailed than the REINZ report, Trade Me’s Property Price Index can still offer you some more context. And if you’d like to learn about the rental market, Trade Me has a Rental Price Index too. Both reports can be found here.

CoreLogic

CoreLogic is a global property information provider, and their reports can be quite technical. But if you’re into data, you may want to bookmark their website as well. You can browse the latest news and research here, or use their Mapping the Market interactive tool. Just select a suburb on the map or search for an address or location.

Homes.co.nz

You might have stumbled across homes.co.nz before: the searchable online property tool provides key insights to the New Zealand property market, in the form of easy-to-digest monthly reports. You can also register to the platform and receive this data directly in your inbox.

Quotable Value (QV)

Last but not the least, New Zealand valuation and property services company Quotable Value (QV) shares its own House Price Index report on a monthly basis, measuring house price movements and capital growth nationwide. For something more visually enticing, you can play with their interactive House Price Index tool here. Just select a region from the drop-down menu and click around to view home value trends.
